Goals, intentions and reflections
We all have different ways of setting goals and reflecting on lessons learned or achievements from the previous year.
The type of planning in this post is for my general life and so I include both business and personal goals. And I mean everything outside of a marketing strategy, finance forecasting or business plan.
So, this is how it goes:
I reflect on wins and lessons from the previous year and write down:
What am I particularly proud of or what amazing things happened?
3 lessons I learned
What am I now going to focus on in the new year, in light of those things?
3 things I can’t wait for (having something to look forward to really helps)
Then I set some intentions for the future
In 3 months time:
I will be
I will have
I will see
Then the same for 12 months time, 3 years time and 5 years time
Then I just move onto a few goals, which can be either short or long term and break them down like this:
Name of goal - and explain it
When I want to achieve this goal
Break it down into smaller steps - what will it take to get there?
What does success look like?
This is the bare minimum that I do at the beginning of every year.
Something I need to be better at is actually revisiting my goals and checking in on the progress of them… otherwise I just end up following different directions and forgetting about the small steps that I worked hard to determine.
A typical Wild Goals and Intentions setting session that we have every Monday morning.
At Wild we have a planning session on Monday mornings so we can remind ourselves of the small steps that are taking us towards our long term goals. Basically this helps to avoid the overwhelm of thinking about that massive task or project that you don’t know where to start with. It’s also way better than New Year’s resolutions, because this helps with consistency throughout the year.
