Why I’m not hiding the fact I took a break from social media.
“Don’t tell your followers that you took a break from social media and now you’re back.” - Some rando expert
Well. I shouldn’t really tell you this, but I’m going to anyway. Why? Because I 100% cross-my-heart do not agree with this ‘advice’ that social media experts always say.
I took a break. And now I’m back. Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
The main reason I don’t agree with the statement above, is because I truly want every single person out there to know that TAKING A BREAK IS TOTALLY UTTERLY FINE. Preferable. Nay, essential! You hear me!
I unintentionally took a break from Instagram (and Twitter, and my coworking group, and everything else digital pretty much…) a few weeks ago because I couldn’t open the apps without dreading what I might see. Whether it was all the horrible news about what’s going on in the world, or the good things I was automatically comparing myself to – everything I was engaging with made me feel bad and made what I was trying to work on bad too. So I stepped away.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not easy to take a break from something that you come to rely on (hello fellow business owners) but our mental health is ALWAYS more important. One of the reasons I started my business was so I could realign my personal values and stop shrinking myself and contorting to fit the corporate hustle.
I don't work for companies who demand masking anymore, so why would I do that to myself now? Instead, during my time away from social media, I’ve been reconnecting with my thoughts, limiting screen-time and doing all the little things that make me happy *coughcoffeemangamusiccreativewritingcough*.
And you know what?
I’ve got those Back to School vibes now and I’m buzzing! It feels SO much better being able to engage again all topped up with joy...and that’s exactly what it’s all about. Rest is how we make sure our cups are full, reclaim our joy, and do our best work.
If we need to use social media for our businesses, then let’s not drag ourselves kicking and screaming through it. Let’s commit to singing and laughing and dancing and smiling together instead.
